How Does a Shelf Fit Under a Sloped Ceiling?

Between one and two metres of headroom, the space under a sloped ceiling counts only half under German floor-area rules, and below one metre not at all. A shelf that is the same height across its whole width gives away height there, because the ceiling drops. Sections at different heights do not.

With KUUDU you switch the configurator to "Sections: individual" from two sections upwards and choose gaps, number of boards, foot and cap for each section separately. Shift mode cannot do it.

Doing the maths with the roof pitch

At the gable wall the ceiling drops along the front of the shelf, and every section further out may be lower than the one before it. At the knee wall the ceiling is the same height across the whole width, but it rises into the room, and the shelf in front of it gains height with every centimetre of distance from the wall. How much, in both cases, follows from the roof pitch: difference in height equals distance times the tangent of the pitch. For the gable wall the distance is 75 centimetres, the width of one section.

Height lost per 75 cm section along the gable wall, by roof pitch, and the nearest step in the grid. Calculation: 75 cm × tan(pitch). Where the step is smaller than the loss, every further section moves that much closer to the ceiling.
Roof pitch Ceiling drops per section Step in the grid Difference per section
30° 43.3 cm one board fewer, gap 35 (36.6 cm) 6.7 cm less clearance
35° 52.5 cm two boards fewer, gaps 25 (53.2 cm) fits, just over half a centimetre more clearance
40° 62.9 cm two boards fewer, gaps 25 and 35 (63.2 cm) fits, just under 0.3 cm more clearance
45° 75 cm two boards fewer, gaps 35 (73.2 cm) 1.8 cm less clearance
50° 89.4 cm three boards fewer, gaps 25, 25, 35 (89.8 cm) fits, a good 0.4 cm more clearance

Measure at the outer end of each section. That is where it is lowest, not in the middle.

At 30 and 45 degrees the step in the grid is smaller than the loss at the ceiling, so there the gap to the slope shrinks from section to section. An example at 35 degrees with 2.20 metres of headroom at the start of the shelf front: at the outer end of the first section 167.5 centimetres remain, it gets six boards and stands 155.6 centimetres high, which leaves just under twelve centimetres of clearance under the slope; the second has 115 centimetres left there and gets four boards, 102.4 centimetres; the third has 62.4 and gets two, 49.2 centimetres. The third section then stands in the zone that counts for nothing under the rules.

The heights come about like this: foot 10 centimetres, a gap of 35 at the bottom, 25 above it, every board 1.6, a one centimetre cap on top (two boards make 49.2 centimetres, three 75.8, four 102.4, five 129, six 155.6, seven 182.2). The configurator shows the total height while you build.

KUUDU wall unit 375 × 201 cm with centre tower: five sections with 2, 3, 6, 3 and 2 boards, room view
The 375 × 201 cm wall unit with centre tower stands free in the room and climbs towards the middle: two boards, three, six, three, two. Under a slope you need only the half that descends.

Right at the knee wall, the knee wall is the limit. Move it away and the permitted height grows, per 10 centimetres of distance by just under 6 centimetres at 30 degrees and just under 12 at 50 degrees, in between accordingly. A knee wall of 1.10 metres under a 40 degree roof allows four boards right at the wall, 102.4 centimetres high. With 30 centimetres of distance there is a good 135 centimetres of clearance, and five boards fit.

Where the wall anchor belongs

Every standing shelf comes with a wall anchor that secures it against tipping, and under a slope it belongs on the gable wall or the knee wall, never on the sloped surface itself. Behind that cladding sits the vapour barrier as a rule. Every hole through it weakens the roof. Whether it may be sealed, and how, is in the membrane manufacturer’s instructions.

Knee walls are usually stud walls. Which anchors hold there and how to identify the wall type is in Mounting Shelves: Wall Types, Anchors and the Rental Question; what belongs at which height, so you never have to crouch for anything, is in Planning Shelf Heights: Reach Zones, Book Formats, Intermediate Heights. The wall mounts of a wall shelf go on the same wall as the anchor: gable or knee wall, where the wall is vertical. On to the page on shelves for sloped ceilings.
