Mounting a Shelf: Wall Types, Anchors, and the Rental Question

Mounting a shelf on a wall is a solved problem. Fastener manufacturers publish exactly which anchor carries what in which wall, and tenancy courts have spent decades clarifying what drilling means for a rental. The reason it still goes wrong in practice is that people skip the first step: finding out what the wall is made of. Everything else follows from that.

Step one: know your wall

Tap the wall and drill a small test hole where the shelf will hide it anyway. Concrete sounds dead to the knock and produces fine grey dust; solid brick sounds similarly solid with reddish dust; hollow block and perforated brick feel solid but the drill repeatedly breaks into cavities; plasterboard sounds hollow and drills almost without resistance, with white gypsum dust. Old buildings add a fifth case, plaster over lath or soft historic brick, where the test hole matters most.

Before any drilling, check for what runs inside the wall. Cables usually rise vertically above sockets and switches, and pipes run near bathrooms and kitchens; an inexpensive detector finds both. Drilling next to a socket without checking is the one genuinely risky move in this whole task.

Step two: match the anchor

The rules of thumb from fastener documentation are consistent. Concrete and solid brick take standard expansion plugs, and carry the most. Perforated brick and hollow block need anchors that spread along their length or knot behind the cavity, because an expansion plug finds nothing to press against; manufacturers make dedicated hollow-wall and frame anchors for exactly this. Plasterboard takes toggle or cavity anchors that clamp the board from behind – and here the limit is the board itself, not the anchor. Manufacturer load tables for single plasterboard put workable loads far below what the same anchor holds in concrete, which is why heavy shelving on plasterboard belongs in the studs behind the board or on a proper mounting rail.

Two habits make every anchor stronger. Drill the hole to the stated diameter, not wider, because a sloppy hole halves the grip. And load the fastener in shear rather than pull where possible: a bracket that hangs weight downward along the wall is doing an easier job than one being pulled straight out of it. Step three: the rental question

German tenancy law is friendlier to drilling than most tenants assume. Courts treat dowel holes in reasonable numbers as ordinary contractual use of a flat – the landlord has to accept them, and a famous Federal Court decision (BGH VIII ZR 10/92) struck down lease clauses that obliged tenants to remove all plugs and invisibly close every hole on moving out. What counts as reasonable is a question of the individual case: commentary often cites a rough order of ten to twenty holes per room, and courts have accepted far more where the flat offered no alternatives, while also finding several dozen in a single bathroom excessive.

The practical reading, not legal advice but common sense from the case law: drill where mounting is genuinely needed, keep the count moderate, and close the holes neatly with filler when you leave, which costs minutes per hole. From that perspective a shelf system that hangs on one line of anchors, and that later remounts on the same line logic in the next flat, is the tenant-friendly configuration of the problem – the hallway shelf is a typical case, with a handful of anchors instead of a grid.

Weight, counted

Whatever the wall, the arithmetic stays the same: shelf weight plus contents, with books and records dominating. A metre of hardcovers weighs around 25 kilograms, a metre of records twice that. Add it up, compare it against what the fastener documentation states for your wall type, and keep a margin. When the sum gets uncomfortable on a difficult wall, the answer is usually not a bigger anchor but a different structure – a freestanding shelf that touches the wall only for tip protection, which reduces the wall's job from carrying everything to holding a light line. None of this needs specialist tools: a drill, a detector, the right anchors for the tested wall, and ten minutes of reading the fastener maker's table. The wall will hold what the numbers say it holds.
